Introduction
Satellite TV systems are comprised of two main parts, the receiver and the dish. The satellite receiver is the box that takes the digital signal the dish gets from satellites, decodes it, and sends it on to your TV. The most basic function of a satellite receiver is that of a tuner. This is the box that receives multiple signals and lets you choose the one you want to listen to or, in the case of a satellite receiver, watch. Your choice of dishes boils down to 18-inch vs. 18 x 20. Selecting systems is relatively straightforward, because you have a limited number of choices. The major decisions are between which services you want, how many rooms you want to install the system into, and a number of convenience features. Recently DIRECTV added Local Channels, HDTV, 6-channel Dolby Digital Sound and Spanish Language Service (its long past due, in our opinion) options making the DIRECTV offering very complete and high quality.

Convenience Features
There is a group of convenience features that have nothing to do with the kind of programming you can receive; they're the nice-to-have features that make watching TV easier or more fun or make your satellite system more flexible. While it's almost a certainty that no system will ever have every feature, you should know whats available. These features include TV time-controls for kids, Picture-in-guide (ability to watch a show while reviewing the on-screen guide), Multiple audio output jacks to power Home Theater systems, on-screen caller ID. Also, dont forget a universal remote control unless you like watching your family and friends struggle!

Dish Choices
You have two choices in types of dish that will effect the types of services you can receive, and the number of TVs you can connect to the system. Your choice is between 18-inch disks, which are fine for one or two TVs if you plan on using two TVs then you need a dual-output dish. To get advanced services such as HDTV, local programming and foreign language programs, then you will need the wider 18-by-20 dish in most parts of the country. These larger disks also support up to 4 TVs.
